Elementary Season 7: Impressive so far

It’s the farewell season for Elementary, perhaps one of my most favorite TV shows in a decade. I haven’t enjoyed a show this much since the first couple of seasons of CSI, I think. I love the intelligent yet flawed characters, their reasonable and human situations, and their dogged determination to get to the bottom of everything that passes in front of them. Season 7 may be the end of the series, but the writers and performers appear to have left almost nothing on the table.

First and foremost, I am enjoying the returning characters. The season starts in London and we get to revisit with Kitty Winter and her son (somewhat rumored to be Sherlock’s but never truly explained). Further into the season we have enjoyed the presence of Cassie Lenue, perhaps the best liar ever and marginally and potentially Sherlock’s daughter – but it’s doubtful. We even get to catch up with the former leader of the powerful Mara Tres  gang, who has given up the life, gotten his face tattoos removed, and turned into a soccer coach for little league. It’s been entertaining to say the least to get some form of closure on these characters and others.

It’s also been interesting to see Sherlock be, well, wrong about some things, and almost overly right on others. I don’t want to play spoiler, so I won’t go into detail. Let’s just say that this is another part of the show I enjoy because I enjoy the humanity. Seeing him express concern about others, often in the most awkward of ways, is charming. Jonny Lee Miller has mastered Sherlock to a level that is absolutely amazing.

I am sorry to see this show go. Obviously, I truly enjoy the witty writing, the twisted mysteries, and the personal asides that have come along. However, I am smart enough to know that there is no perfect right time, but it’s better to go out solid and on your own terms and not just get dropped. Kudos to CBS in giving this skilled team a final season to clear the deck and make it all truly memorable.

Now, about Joan’s blond hair…
